Sermon: The Love of Family - by Shora Empty

Greetings, and thank you all for joining me today. I would like to speak to you on a topic that is very near and dear to my heart, the love of family.

What is a family exactly? Is it just people you're blood related too? Is it people you've met over the years and grown close too? Why do you need one? What purpose does having a family serve?

Families are where we come together to connect with one another. The past, current, and future generations to interact and creature bonds with each other though good and bad times. They are who we experience our grand achievements with, and our greatest failures with. It is with our families, and through them that we have the most influence to do good within in the world.

Families are part of the basic building blocks of society, both on Ateraan and throughout the universe. It is where we learn social graces, loyalty, teamwork, and trust. It is where we learn to love, to give purpose, and to help bear each other's burdens. I believe that family should be cherished and that the Goddess designed her faith around such a structure. It is through family and faith, that we find the value of being part of something greater then ourselves.

There is a comprehensive drive among all people to feel like we belong. It is why we come together to support common causes, cheer for someone winning an arena match, or to even feel proud of where we come from, or who we serve. It is why we build towns, and structure guilds. For the fortunate among us, that desire began with loving parents and siblings in a home that allowed room for us as children to grow and learn who we truly are. We were allowed to explore our identity, and beliefs in an environment that protected us.

Others who did not have this ideal situation as children growing up still have the capacity to forge family and friendships of their own. We create places where we feel like we can succeed, and grow in our own right, and surround ourselves with the love and support that others are willing to give us. And it is through these families that we encourage each other for the betterment of all, and follow the teachings of Waylumi.

The strength of your family can encourage and support our commitments to loved ones, our communities, and the Goddess. Having a family to support you can help inspire you to make choices beyond self-interest and immediate gratification. Spending time and being together with your family will certainly bring laughter, and comfort when needed, and help the young to learn and grow with wisdom to teach to future generations. Our desire to feel like we belong to something is there for a good reason. Because we do belong.

It is a given that we must depend on our family from the beginning. A newborn baby cannot survive on its own. At birth we each have a mother, for nymphs that mother may be Ateraan itself, but we are given someone to watch over us and help us. Preparing us for challenges we may face in the years to come.

It is through our families that we learn, intentionally or not, the values that shape us into our adult selves. Being part of a family can be a large responsibility and is humbling when we realize that we ourselves are a reflection of them. For those of the Waylumi faith our Goddess is a part of our family. And while we may stumble along her divine path at times she has always been there for us ready to lift us up once again to continue along our spiritual journey. Her tenets and teachings reflect just this to us, and she brings us together as a family to provide the skills and unity for just that purpose.

Part of belonging to a family means we step in to help each other. As children our first role in the family is a dependent child, each growing to fill a new role as we mature. In the faith of Waylumi it's our duty to care for others and show them what the love and unity of a family can bring to each person. It's a sacred responsibility of ours that we gladly accept to care for, and help each other within our faith, and do our best to reach out and show others the same.

We hold each other responsible for our actions, and help one another through troubling times. We follow the example our Goddess has given to us to encourage, love, and listen. Sharing in each other's successes, and comforting one another in sorrow.

By following these principles in our homes, we can each influence those around us. Many take pride in family names and heritage of honorable people they hold as ancestors. Others put aside past transgressions and seek to redeem their family's pasts. We all have essential roles in strengthening our faith and family's ties into relationships that can link us together throughout time.

As I was once told by an old cleric, the people we surround ourselves with either raise or lower our standards. They either help us to becomes the best versions of ourselves, or encourage us to become lesser versions of ourselves.
We become like our friends, and family. No one becomes great on their own. The people around us help make us great. We all need people in our lives who raise our standards, and remind us of our essential purpose, and challenge us to become the best version of ourselves.
